   CARBOHYDRATE CONUNDRUM ?

Q: I am mixed up -- what type (and amount) of carbs should I consume after my workout? I'm trying to build muscle and lose fat and I've heard and read that I need around 100 grams of sugar after my workout to really recover and grow?

A: Nonsense. One hundred grams of sugar? If you want to do that, eat 5 or 6 Snickers Bars, as they taste the best. I don't buy this 100-g crap. You need slow burn or low glycemic carbs if your quest is maximum muscle gain, even after workouts. The window of opportunity does not mean window of stupidity. If you want to lose fat or build muscle and lose fat at the same time you'd be much advised to utilize a body process known as neoglucogenesis (the utilization of fats and / or proteins instead of carbs or glucose to replenish your glycogen stores.) Your body has the ability to convert fat into glycogen through this process. And if you are trying to burn fat, then this should be your whole goal, and the way to achieve it is by NOT consuming carbs (no more than 25 grams anyway) after your workout. On the flip side, if you ingest a big load of carbs (especially simple sugars) after your workout, any fat burning you stimulated from the workout will be stopped dead in its tracks. Naturally, we feel that the hydrolysates or predigested proteins and BCAA's that you find in Muscle Provider or Mass Aminos, work best. When you eat a large amount of sugary carbs, you release a large amount of insulin. Insulin does it's best to stabilize things by driving sugar, or glucose, into muscle cells (in the very best case scenario). The trouble is, like paper grocery store sacks filled to the breaking point with Twinkies, the muscle cells can only hold so much. Excesses of glucose are converted into fatty acids and triglycerides by the liver and fat tissue. The high insulin and glycogen concentrations induce the production and storage of fat. As if that weren't bad enough, insulin counteracts the effects of Human Growth Hormone (HGH). Although insulin is mildly anabolic (it probably should be called FAT-ABOLIC), HGH is significantly anabolic and promotes fat loss. Of the two, you'd much rather have high levels of HGH circulating through your blood.

Highly processed carbs, the so-called sugar rush, puts an absolute stop to any fat burning. After your workouts, or at any time, eat oatmeal, potatoes, rice, and occasionally pasta. If you prefer to drink your postworkout meal then stick to carb sources like Dahlia Inulin, 5-saccharide grade maltodextrin and rice solids - (all of which you'll find in Mass Maker). These carbs are the best choice, not a post workout sugar fix. Carbs, just like protein, are not all created equal, and some will help burn fat and build muscle, while others just supply empty calories that feed your fat face!

   BICEPS FREAKS AND PEAKS

Q: What should I do to build complete biceps including peak?

A: Biceps shape is dependent on genetics and exercise. Here are some great exercises to try and influence the height of your biceps as much as possible:

• Dumbbell concentration curl
Do these standing, not seated. Bend over at the waist with one arm on your knee to stabilize your upper body; the arm with the dumbbell should hang free at a 90% angle. Curl the weight up to the shoulder without moving your upper arm or elbow. Tense your muscles fully at the top.

• Curl on Lat Machine
Lie on a bench with your head directly under the lat bar. Have a partner bring the bar down to you. Keeping your elbows stationary, slowly curl the bar to your eyes, squeeze and return to the starting position at arms length.

• Face Down Incline Curl
This is a great exercise in which the bicep reaches peak contraction at the very top of the movement. Be certain to tense the biceps at the top of the movement.

Here's a good routine for a natural:

Triceps Pullover and Press:
4 sets, 6 - 8 reps

Heavy Barbell Curls:
4 sets, 6 - 8 reps

DB Incline Curls
3 sets, 6 - 8 reps

Lat Machine Curls
3 sets, 10 - 12 reps

Finish with two consecutive triceps movements

Seated French Press, EZ Bar:
3 sets, 8 - 10 reps

Triceps Pushdowns:
3 sets, 10 - 12 reps
Follow this program for a maximum of six weeks, and then go back to a simplified program with two bicep exercises and three triceps exercises for at least 10 weeks. Be sure to add an extra 50 - 100 grams of protein to your diet.

   OLD SCHOOL MAYBE
   BUT WITH A DOCTORATE!

Q: In an old Muscle Media 2000-supplement review, it said that Beverly is great, but outdated, an old school. How can you be both great and old school?

A: Good question. Beverly is about as old school as free weights. Do dumbbells and barbells still work? If weights worked back in the days when EAS produced supplements that actually did work, shouldn't weights work now? In fact, there is nothing better than free weights, claims for Soloflex and Bowflex notwithstanding. The supplement industry is much the same. Good examples are desiccated liver and milk isolate and egg proteins. Milk proteins, egg proteins and liver were the top supplements of every top bodybuilder from 1965 to about 1990, but then big commercial money came into bodybuilding. How is it that the human species somehow made a metabolic and biophysical quantum leap (that would normally take 100,000 years) in this time frame, and all of a sudden egg, liver and milk proteins somehow do not work anymore and whey concentrates do? Cheap dairy whey concentrates along with curds are for pigs, (remember the rhyme). Muscle Synergy is the best new supplement since Creatine anyway and we developed that. Beverly has actually been a leader in the industry since its inception. The difference is, we don't rush into things that have never been proven to work. Just because something is shown to double the lean mass of African Fire Ants in research, it doesn't mean that Ant Fuel as a supplement will help humans. Even worse is how some companies rant and rave over unproven products derived from bull testicles just to say they have the latest testosterone booster or how half the ingredients you read on labels these days, don't even exist in the product or elsewhere in nature!

We could call the Whey Protein Hydrolysate in Muscle Provider "Super anabolic methoxyiso-nitro all day amino-dispersion protein matrix" and this would be legal. We could use the cheapest dairy whey and call it the same thing if we wanted to and get away with it too.

Our reputation depends on results rather than market share. We are constantly striving to come out with latest and greatest supplemental products, but it will never be done just for the sake of making a quick buck. If it's going to get our Beverly label, it better work.

   REAL PROS (DRUG-FREE) USE BEVERLY

Q: Why don't any pros endorse Beverly if your stuff is so good?

A: Listen, we don't have to pay people to use our product or what's more, say that they do. And, as a matter of fact, many do use Beverly. Every day we find out about a new pro that uses Provider, Size or Muscle Synergy. But, they get paid by some other company to endorse their spurious products like new andro explosion or whatever. These endorsements you see by the pros are not testimonials, but advertorials. We don't put more money into Deca poster boys than we do product. The fact is most pros grow on sawdust (and steroids) anyway. This is why they're pros. If you want a real testament to results, a true endorsement, and even inspiration, then look at what a person with average or even bad genetics uses, and gets results with. In order for these people to get results, they must use the most potent product, or nothing is going to happen. You have to have one or the other - superior genes or superior supplements. If you have neither (and one is by choice) then you will waste a lot of time and money, my friend. That's because average genetics can NEVER overcome poor or average supplements. Take a look at the real trainees here in BodyMuscle or in Beverly's No Nonsense Newsletter or on www.bodybuildingworld.com Look to the Natural Pros if you're just determined to know what real pros take.

Here's a fact --- Beverly has graduated more athletes into the drug free professional ranks this past year than NCAA basketball.

There are more natural pros on Beverly than any other product; in fact you can go to many pro shows and the top half of the placements will go to Beverly guys. Heck, if Beverly sponsored all these fine athletes we couldn't afford to make products any more. We sponsor our athletes by personally helping them meet their goals. This form of sponsorship is available to everyone including you.
